Do EVs Have Transmissions? The Myth of the Maintenance-Free Electric Car

JR Luna • April 2, 2026

As you drive around Ventura, you’ve likely noticed a significant increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on the road. From Teslas to Rivians and the Ford F-150 Lightning, the electric revolution is officially here. One of the biggest selling points for these vehicles is the promise of "zero maintenance." With no engine oil to change, no spark plugs to replace, and no timing belts to worry about, many owners believe they can simply drive their cars indefinitely without ever visiting a repair shop.

However, as transmission and drivetrain specialists, we are here to clear up a common misconception. While EVs are certainly less maintenance-intensive than internal combustion engines, they are far from "maintenance-free." Specifically, the idea that EVs don't have transmissions is a myth that could lead to costly repairs if ignored.

The Single-Speed Transmission Explained

When people ask, "Do EVs have transmissions?" the technical answer is yes. While they don't have the complex 10-speed automatic or 6-speed manual gearboxes found in gas-powered cars, they almost all utilize what is known as a single-speed reduction gear transmission.

What is a Reduction Gear?

Electric motors are incredibly efficient and can produce 100% of their torque at zero RPM. They can also spin at much higher speeds than a gasoline engine, and often reach 15,000 to 20,000 RPM. If your wheels spun that fast, you’d be traveling at hundreds of miles per hour instantly.

The reduction gear acts as the bridge between the high-speed motor and the wheels. It "reduces" the motor's RPM to a manageable speed for the tires while multiplying the torque to help the car accelerate smoothly. This unit contains gears, bearings, and most importantly, lubricating fluid.

The Myth of the Maintenance-Free Drivetrain

Because there are no "gear shifts," many manufacturers and owners assume the transmission is a sealed unit that never needs attention. This is similar to the "lifetime fluid" claims we see in gas vehicles, and it carries the same risks.

Transmission Fluid in EVs

Just like a traditional gearbox, the reduction gears in an EV generate heat and friction. Over time, the specialized oil inside these units can break down or become contaminated with microscopic metal shavings from the gears bedding in.

If this fluid isn't inspected or exchanged according to a proper service interval, it can lead to bearing failure or gear whine. Replacing a total drive unit in an EV can cost upwards of $5,000 to $10,000, making a simple fluid inspection a very wise investment.

The Critical Role of Thermal Management

In a traditional car, the radiator primarily cools the engine. In an EV, the cooling system is far more complex and arguably more critical. Electric vehicles use advanced liquid cooling loops to manage the temperature of three main components:

1. The Battery Pack

2. The Inverter/Power Electronics

3. The Electric Drive Motor

Why Battery Coolant Matters

Batteries are extremely sensitive to temperature. If they get too hot, they degrade faster; if they stay too cold, they lose range. Most EVs use a specialized glycol-based coolant that circulates through the battery plate.

Over time, this coolant can become acidic or lose its protective properties. If the cooling system fails or the fluid degrades, it can lead to "thermal throttling," where the car limits your power to protect the battery, or in extreme cases, permanent battery damage. This is why regular cooling system pressure tests and fluid checks are essential for EV longevity.

Why Specialization Matters for EV Service

Servicing an electric vehicle isn't the same as working on a Honda Civic. EVs operate on high-voltage systems often between 400 and 800 volts. One wrong move by an untrained technician can be fatal or result in the "bricking" of the car's expensive computer systems.

At our shop, we have invested in the training and specialized tools required to handle these high-voltage systems safely. We understand the specific nuances of EV drivetrains, from the orange high-voltage cabling to the specific torque requirements of aerodynamic wheels.

Preparing for the Future in Ventura

We’re Ventura’s go-to experts for all things drivetrain-related. Whether you are driving a vintage manual transmission or a brand-new electric SUV, our goal is to ensure your vehicle remains reliable for as long as you own it.

The "maintenance-free" label is a marketing term, not a mechanical reality. By staying ahead of reduction gear fluid changes and cooling system flushes, you can ensure that your EV's "lifetime" is a long and happy one.

If you have questions about your EV’s maintenance schedule or want a professional to look at your reduction gear fluid, give us a call or stop by the shop. We are ready for the electric revolution, and we are here to help you navigate it.
